Esher
While the village atmosphere of Esher has been maintained by the cottages and parish church, which overlook the village green at the back of the High Street, the High Street has kept up with the times and enjoys a sophisticated mix of excellent restaurants, bistros, bars and coffee shops as well as boutiques, high quality furniture stores and a Waitrose supermarket.
History
The Bear public house in the High Street dates from the early 1800's when it had stabling for 100 horses for the coaches that plied the road from London to Portsmouth. Formally a hunting lodge of Henry VI, many famous guests were accommodated at 'The Bear' including Charles II, William of Orange and Lord Nelson.
Close behind The Bear lies the old parish church of St. George. Built in 1540, the church was not used once they built Christ Church in 1854 and remains almost exactly the same as it was 130 years ago. It can be visited on Saturday mornings during the summer. Perhaps Esher’s most famous patron was Queen Victoria, who enjoyed many childhood holidays at Claremont House. She was a frequent visitor after her coronation and returned with Prince Albert to worship in St George. In 1877 she presented Esher with a drinking fountain which today stands in the High Street.
Claremont House and gardens lie just one mile southwest of Esher. The house, designed by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown for Clive of India, is now the private Claremont Fan School but is open to the public some weekends. The gardens are owned by The National Trust and known as Claremont Landscape Garden. Featuring in its 50 acres, landscaped treasures of the 18th century, it is renown for its turf amphitheatre rising above the lake, one of only two surviving examples of its kind in Europe.
Leisure
Local beauty spots abound, including Arbrook Lane, Claremont Landscape Gardens, Esher Common and West End Village, now a conservation area. However, Esher does not remain in the past, but offers much to its present inhabitants.

Sandown Park offers not only horse racing for which it is so famous, but also has a dry-ski slope, health club, go-kart track. snooker club and golf club.
